Katherine Thomas was born in
Pontypridd, South Wales. She
began her harp studies with Alena Roberts and then Meinir Heulyn.
In 1991 she was awarded the Blue Riband in the National
Eisteddfod and in 1992 she won the Nansi Richrds Memorial Scholarship.
Katherine continued her studies at the Guildhall School of Music
& Drama, London where she studied with David Watkins. Following graduation in 1996 Katherine was awarded with
scholarships by both the Welsh Arts Council and the Countess of Munster
Musical Trust, which enabled her to continue her studies abroad with
Edward Witsenburg (Holland). In
1995 Katherine was awarded a Fellowship to attend the Aspen Music
Festival, Colorado, USA, where she worked with Nancy Allen (New York
Philharmonic). During her four years at the festival, Katherine had the
opportunity to work with eminent conductors from both America and
Europe. She also gave the
premiere of several new chamber works for harp – including
compositions by Sydney Hodkinson and Bernard Rands.
Katherine returned to Aspen to teach during the summer of 2000.
She frequently plays with the City of Birmingham Symphony
Orchestra and the orchestra of the Welsh National Opera. As well as giving solo performances, Katherine frequently collaborates with various artistes. She performs in a duo with flautist, Diane Clark, and is also a member of the ‘Bay Trio’ – an ensemble of flute, voice and harp. If you would like a written quote, click here.
